Lyrical Dance Classes in Kitchener
Movement connected to the meaning of a song, built on breath, phrasing, and honest emotional expression.
Who lyrical classes are for
Dancers with some experience
Lyrical asks you to follow choreography and connect to musicality at the same time. If you're brand new to dance, our beginner drop-ins are the better place to start.
Dancers who want to feel the music
If you've ever wanted to dance a song instead of just counting through it, lyrical is built for that. Expect a focus on breath, phrasing, and emotional honesty in every combination.
Contemporary and hip-hop dancers
Lyrical is a natural bridge between contemporary and hip-hop. Dancers from either background find it deepens their expressive range and musicality.
Performance-minded students
Lyrical pieces are often the most personal, expressive work a dancer performs. If you want movement with emotional weight, this is the class.
What to expect in a lyrical class
Lyrical dance connects movement to the narrative of a song. Classes focus on breath, phrasing, and expressive quality. It's a natural bridge between contemporary and hip-hop for dancers who want emotional depth in their movement.
Each class starts with a warm-up focused on breath and range of motion, then moves into choreography built phrase by phrase, with real attention paid to the story of the song and how your movement carries it. This is not about hitting sharp counts, it's about meaning something with every phrase.
This class is best suited to dancers who already have some movement background. If you've never danced before, start with a beginner drop-in first and come back to lyrical once you're comfortable following choreography.
What students say
“The first thing I noticed about classes at Kollective was how welcoming of an atmosphere Kezea created. At my previous dance studios it felt like nobody really cared, but at Kollective if I'm not there people will notice (in a good way!). It's a wonderful safe space from all the toxicity and competition often found in other studios.”
“Kezea is one of the most creative, patient, and dedicated people I’ve ever met. Her passion for dance is absolutely contagious, and her teaching style strikes the perfect balance between challenging and fun. She has an incredible gift for pushing you out of your comfort zone while still building on your pre-existing strengths. Every class with her will challenge you in the best way possible. Even after moving an hour away, I still made the trip to attend her classes — I simply couldn’t get enough.”
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need experience?
- Lyrical classes are not aimed at total beginners. You should be comfortable following choreography and have some base movement vocabulary. If you've never danced before, start with a beginner drop-in first and come try lyrical once you're comfortable following choreography.
- What is lyrical dance?
- Lyrical connects movement to the meaning of a song. Instead of hitting counts for their own sake, you're dancing the story and emotion inside the music, with attention to breath and phrasing.
- Is lyrical the same as contemporary?
- They're related but not identical. Lyrical sits as a bridge between contemporary and hip-hop, it borrows the emotional expression of contemporary and can carry some of the groove and phrasing of hip-hop, depending on the song.
- What should I wear?
- Comfortable, stretchy clothing that lets you move through full range of motion. Bare feet or dance socks are common for this style; check with your instructor if you're not sure.
- How big are the classes?
- Small, typically 8 to 14 students. Enough space to work on individual expression, small enough that the instructor can give you real feedback.
- Where is Kollective Studios?
- 259 King Street West, Unit 203, Kitchener, ON N2G 1B1, downtown Kitchener, second floor above King Street.
